WEDDINGS: Backhus, Jay exchange vows Sept. 9

Jennifer Backhus, Tampa, and Michael Jay, Goessel, were married Saturday, Sept. 9, at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Clark Davis officiating the double-ring ceremony.


Parents of the couple are Brad and Kathy Backhus, Tampa, and Larry and Peggy Jay of Goessel. Grandparents are Paul and Edna Backhus, Tampa.


Amy Schroeder, Newton, served as the maid of honor with Michelle Hajek, Wichita, Karry Jay, Goessel, and Heather Ochoa, Newton, serving as bridesmaids. Danielle Heath, Salina, was the junior bride.


Brian Jay, Detroit, Mich., served as best man, with Jason Backhus, Tampa, Scott Rosfeld, Goessel, and Jason Regier, Hutchinson, serving as groomsmen. Chad Mueller, Tampa, was the junior groom.


Candlelighters were Kristin and Kevin Mueller, Tampa. The flower girl was Jaiden Ochoa, Newton. The ringbearer was Tyler Heath, Salina. Gift carriers were Rebecca Quick, Newton and Melissa Lorson, Wichita.


Vocalists were Rod Koons and Lola Unruh, both of Hillsboro. Betty Mueller, Tampa, was the organist, and Dawn Bentz, Hope, was the pianist, and Pat Petterson, Topeka, was the flutist.


The bride’s gown was made of white satin and featured a leasque waistline, scoop neckline and short sleeves. Venise lace embellished the entire bodice. The full-gathered skirt and cathedral-length train of organza was highlighted with schiffili lace and shiffi edging. She carried a cascading bouquet of white roses, stephanotis and babies breath.


A reception dinner and dance was held following the ceremony at the Senior Center in Tampa. It was hosted by Tom and Beverly Reid, Marion, John and Wanda Lewis, Wichita, Ron and Jody Heath, Salina, Greg Jacobson, Hope. and Rod Mueller, Cheyenne, Wyo. The dinner was catered by Marissa Makovec.


The bride is a 1997 graduate of Centre High School and a 2000 graduate of Hesston College. She is employed by the Newton Medical Center.


The groom is a 1994 graduate of Goessel High School and a 1996 graduate of Hutchinson Community College. He is employed by Ag Power in Hillsboro.


After a honeymoon to Branson, Mo., the couple reside in rural Hillsboro.


A rehearsal dinner was held Sept. 8 at the American Legion Hall in Tampa. The meal was catered by Keith and Barb Banman. It was hosted by Harry and Peggy Jay, Don and Maxine Bauer and Martha Hall.
