Trojan boys lose, girls win at Chase County

Grant Brubacher’s floating 12-foot jumper from the left side sailed over the hoop as the final seconds ran out, leaving the Hillsboro Trojans on the short end of a 34-32 score at Chase County Tuesday night, Dec.5.

It was a disappointing but somehow appropriate ending to the game as the Trojans struggled all night to get the ball into the hoop. Hillsboro missed its first 11 field goal attempts before Tyler Weinbrenner finally canned a 3-pointer with 2:35 to go in the first period. Combined with two free throws from Michael Hagen less than a minute earlier, the bucket gave Hillsboro a temporary 5-2 lead.

Unfortunately, the shooting percentage didn’t improve much the rest of the game — for either team. The score was only 12-12 at intermission, then Chase County pulled ahead 26-22 after three periods.

No Trojans broke double figures in scoring. Hillsboro now stands at 1-1 on the season.

Meanwhile, the Hillsboro girls led from the start on the way to a comfortable 52-30 win to move their record to 2-0. Hillsboro led 13-6 at the quarter, 28-10 at half and 37-22 after three quarters.

Shannon Kroeker led the team with 14 points, and Julie Hett and Angela Herzet each added 10.
