Just wanted to pass along a positive note about today’s teens.
Andrew Jost, a senior at Hillsboro High School, brought a wad of bills he had found on the floor at the sub-state volleyball matches Saturday to Bob Woelk, who was working the scorers’ table. He could have easily kept quiet and kept the cash. But, he turned it in.
A few minutes later a distraught-looking high school student from another town came by asking if anyone had found some cash. He was shocked to hear that in fact someone had turned in the money.
Congratulations to Andrew’s parents for teaching him how to do the right thing and to Andrew and his friends for having the courage to do it.

I’m a little disappointed that the non-major political party candidates were not allowed to be on stage with Bush and Gore during the presidential debates. In a free society and democratic nation like ours is supposed to be, it almost seems un-American to ignore them.

It appears to me that the only major difference between Republicans and Democrats is to which special interests they cater and which areas they wish to waste our tax money.

We’re glad that the 4-H clubs took advantage of our community window at the Free Press to promote 4-H Week recently. It is available to non-profit organizations in Hillsboro and the surrounding area to call attention to their special events. Let us know when you want to use it.

When you see a nail on the ground, do you see just a nail or a flat tire waiting to happen and the expense to fix it?

I like to watch the Discovery Channel. One night I was thinking how cool it would be if all of a sudden they would start showing video of Columbus landing on the shores of North America, or maybe George Washington throwing a dollar across the Potomac.
It’s not likely to happen, but with the possibility of life on other planets, who knows? Maybe somebody was here and made a video or some other type of visual record of what was going on before we invented cameras, etc.

How about those Jayhawks and Chiefs!

Looks as though downtown Hillsboro could use a few more buildings. Everything that can be occupied is now taken, which is a great thing to have happen. But it doesn’t allow for growth or expansion.
The city is planning to expand the business/commercial zoning around the downtown area which, hopefully, will open things up for future businesses wanting to come join in the progress.
