LETTERS: McKenzie’s letter misleads voters about Barnett

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN MARY J. CLEMMER – TAMPA
In answer to Carissa McKenzie’s letter (Oct. 4), I would say that if she had won the prinmary for state senator agiainst Jim Barnett, she would have been an opponent of Stevens. Now she seems to support him.

You can be certain that Jim Barnett fully understands EPA regulations and the concerns farmers have of their effect on farms. He was reared on a farm and his father still farms northeast of Emporia. He considered being a farmer.

Barnett has not announced that he will not see his patients during the legislative session.

He met with the leadership of the Kansas Senate to confirm two issues:

(1) To affirm that he could maintain his practice of medicine while serving in the Kansas Senate;

(2) He wanted to know if he could make a difference. He feels he can do both.

Barnett has been active in his community. He was instrumental in having beer kegs marked so the buyer could be traced when under-aged drinkers were found by the police.

He is not a one-issue candidate. Agriculture, education, diversity, health, and youth issues are his passions. He feels his proposals can save millions of dollars for Kansas taxpayers and provide long-term stability to our state’s budget.

I have seen firsthand his capabilities as a doctor. He listens carefully to his patients. The majority of his patients are elderly.

Barnett’s wife and children are willing to give up personal time with him so that he may serve his country. My husband and I are willing to adjust to his changed schedule to allow him time to serve.

It is my understanding that no doctor is currently serving in our state senate.

Barnett will be an excellent Kansas state senator. He will not make it a career.
