Hesston 38, Marion 14-The Warriors came back to tie undefeated Hesston after the Swathers jumped to a 14-0 first-quarter lead, but then couldn’t keep pace the rest of the way.

The Swathers scored first on touchdown runs by Kyle Schwanke and Michael King, but Jarvis Whiteman pulled Marion back into the game with scoring runs of 71 and two yards.

Hesston added two scores in the second quarter on a four-yard run by Schwanke and a six-yard pass from Trey Raney to Ryan Linton. Hesston scored its fifth touchdown in the third quarter on a one-yard run by Raney. Adam Mason added a 27-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to round out the scoring.

Whiteman finished the game with 113 yards on 16 carries to pace Marion, which dropped its third straight game after a 4-0 start.

On Friday, Marion continues district play by playing host to Hillsboro (5-2). Game time is 7 p.m.

Canton-Galva 28, Ell-Saline 19-The Eagles came back from a 19-0 half-time deficit-scoring 20 points in the final quarter-to win their district opener and their sixth game of the season against only one loss.

Garrett Thompson scored three straight touchdowns for Canton-Galva on runs of one, 51 and one yards to put the Eagles on top 22-19. A. Smith added some insurance points with a 53-yard touchdown run late in the game.

Thompson finished with 142 rushing yards on 25 carries to pace the Eagles.

The game was an emotional battle for Canton-Galva. The sisters of two Eagles, Darren Yamada and Ryan Schmidt, were critically injured in a car accident earlier in the week. Yamada caught three passes in the game for 22 yards.

The Eagles will face a key district test this Friday when they play host to Sacred Heart (6-1) beginning at 7 p.m.

Quivera Heights 79, Goessel 12-As if they didn’t know already, the Bluebirds were reminded just how tough their district competition will be this year in their opening loss at Bushton.

The Thunderbirds exploded for 57 points in the first quarter, then added 22 more in the second period. Seven different players scored for the home team.

Goessel’s two scores came on a 39-yard run by Ryan Glendenning in the first quarter and a 12-yard pass from Ben Schmidt to Kelcy Voth.

The game was called at halftime.

The task won’t get much easier for Goessel (1-6) next week when they go on the road against Heart of America foe Burrton, 6-1. The following week, the Bluebird host second-ranked Little River (6-0), who beat Burrton 51-6 Friday.

Centre 49, St. Xavier 6-The Cougars rolled to an easy win against their Eisenhower League mates Friday at home.

This was a non-district game. Centre travels to 5-1 Bennington this Friday.

Sedgwick 30, Peabody-Burns 8-The Warriors fell to their fellow Heart of America school in the opening round of district play Friday.

The Warriors (2-4) will face Moundridge on Friday. The Wildcats (1-6) won their first game of the year last week against Remington.
