Tis better to shut out than to be shut out. The Hillsboro Trojans, blanked a week ago by Collegiate, collected a goose egg of their own Friday night, beating Lyons 13-0 at Reimer Field.
The only scoring of the game came in the second period, when Dan Funk caught a 24-yard pass from Ronn Coates to give Hillsboro a 6-0 lead with 10:47 on the clock. Sheldon Funk kicked the extra point.
Dan Funk made a great diving catch of a Coates pass later in the quarter for a 34-yard gain to give Hillsboro a first down at the Lyons 6-yard line. On the next play Ross Duerksen ran it in to put Hillsboro up 13-0 with 3:33 left in the half. Sheldon Funk’s PAT was blocked.
The Trojan defense made that score hold up as they kept the Lions at bay all night. The visitors got their best chance to score early in the fourth quarter when quarterback Elijah Rummler broke loose on a scramble and ran 61 yards before he was caught from behind by Hillsboro’s Ryan Jilka at the Trojan 9-yard line. But some good defense, with the help of a fumbled pitch, kept Lyons out of the end zone.
With the win, Hillsboro moves to 4-2 and will begin district play next week against Herington.
