The Tabor cross country team had a successful day Saturday, Sept. 30, when they competed in the Friends University Invitational.

It was a small meet, with only four teams competing. Trophies were given to the top 15 finishers in each race. Nine of the 10 Bluejays earned that honor.

“The wind was brutal and there were no wind blocks, which greatly affected times,” said coach Karol Hunt. “Only one female ran under 21 minutes and only one male ran under 30 minutes. It was a tough day to race, but I was really pleased with our efforts.”

Karen Shearer paced the women again, with a third-place finish in 21:41. Angela Dohm, Esther Richert, and Kara Richert earned trophies as well. Dohm finished ninth in 24:16; Esther Richert was 15th in 24:34; Kara Richert 16th in 25:48, and Erica Fast 17th in 26:43.

As a team, the women placed second behind host Friends.

The men finished third behind Friends and Kansas Wesleyan.

“We had some good battles with individual Friends and KW runners,” said Hunt. “We were only 12 points out of first and four out of second.”

All five men placed in the top 15. Kevin Nickel was fifth in 30:41; Logan Duerksen seventh in 31:07; Ryan Sperling 10th in 31:36; Derek Pridey 11th in 31:52; and Pete Kleinsasser 13th in 32:26.

The Bluejays have homecoming weekend off, then they head to the NAIA Mid-States Championships on Friday, Oct. 13. The meet is hosted by Baker University in Baldwin City. The women compete at 4 p.m. and the men at 4:30 p.m.
