Two high school bands from Marion County received high marks at the Kansas State Fair last month.

The 59-member Goessel High School Band was one of only four bands to receive a “1+” rating.

Director Bud Meisel said, “I was very pleased and proud of our performance and the band’s attention to detail. What a wonderful group of young people to work with.”

Meanwhile, the Hillsboro Trojan Band received a “1” rating.

“I was very proud of how they stepped up to this performance,” said director Gregg Walker.

In all, 94 total students from Hillsboro Middle School and Hillsboro High School marched together.

“We were only able to practice one time together, so that made this performance that much more impressive,” Walker said. “I do want to say how much I have appreciated the support for the band and hope to see it grow throughout the community.”

Dani Horne is this year’s drum major and has been learning fast, Walker said. She received several positive comments from the judges.

“I am really excited about the future for the band,” said Walker, who is in his first year. “I look forward to seeing them improve as they continue to strive for excellence.”
