Casey Barton collected one goal and three assists and Joel Phelps scored twice as the Tabor College men’s soccer team shut out Sterling 4-0 Saturday in Sterling.

Barton’s goal, on an assist from Damon Turkle, and the first of Phelps’s goals came in the first half of the match. Phelps and David Heim tallied second-half goals.

Tabor coach Nathan Wilkey was largely pleased with his team’s performance at Sterling.

“We’re still giving away opportunities by making mistakes in the back, giving the ball up. But, other than that, we played pretty well.”

Joe Stutzman had the shutout against Sterling and a 3-0 blanking of Southwestern in Winfield Wednesday.

Turkle had the first goal against the Moundbuilders on an assist from Phelps. Dylan Pohlman dished to Phelps for the second tally. Tabor led 2-0 at half. Barton closed the scoring, assisted by Steve Small, in the second half.

Barton was named the NAIA Region IV Player of the Week. In Tabor’s 4-1 win over McPherson College, last week Barton scored all four goals.

He also had a goal and an assist in the victory over the Nebraska school, York College, and scored two goals in the 3-1 conference win over Sterling College.

Tabor goes on the road Wednesday to Ottawa before returning home Saturday to host McPherson at 11:30 a.m. and St. Mary at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10.
