Tabor shocks nationally ranked Bethany!

In what has to rank as one of the biggest upsets in many years of KCAC football–for everyone except coach Tim McCarty and his players, that is–the Tabor College Bluejays defeated 16th-ranked and KCAC favorite Bethany Saturday night at Reimer Field, 14-7.

The Bluejays scored first on a 91-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Matt Insley to wide receiver Henry Cantu. The Bluejays had gotten the ball on their own 2-yard line after a Bethany punt. Two plays pushed it to the 9-yard line, then Insley hit Cantu with a quick pass to the right side and Cantu sprinted past Bethany defenders to the end zone. Dylan Pohlman’s extra point made it 7-0 with 8:47 left in the first quarter.

Bethany tied the game on 5-yard touchdown lob with 13:15 to go in the second quarter. The extra point made it 7-7, and that score held until intermission on a drizzly, cold September evening.

After intermission, the two teams played even until runningback Mike Rogers took a handoff from quarterback Shaun Craft on third-and-one, bounced out to the right side and raced 28 yards to the end zone. Pohlman added the extra point and the Bluejays took a 14-7 lead with 6:39 left in the third quarter.

The Tabor defense, which played brilliantly all night long, kept Bethany at bay to the very end, and, as the clock wound down to end the game, Tabor players, coaches and fans stormed the field in a display of sheer joy and triumph.

With the win, Tabor moves to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the KCAC.
