HHS finishes second at Leon meet

The Hillsboro and several area cross country teams competed at the Bluestem Invitational in Leon on Thursday.



The Hillsboro boys’ team finished second out of 26 teams.



It was a day of improvement for everyone, with seven runners setting personal records.



Senior Garrett Call lead the team in the varsity race again this week, finishing ninth in a time of 17:03.



Aaron Yoder finished 14th in 17:13; Daniel Yoder, 17th in 17:19; Matt Unger, 23rd in 17:43; Adam Jilka, 29th in 17:54; Andy Unger, 58th in 18:52; Nick Unruh, 79th in 20:09.



In the freshman race, Michael Bookless finished 20th in 19:58; Tyler Stout, 20:26; Wade Kimbrel, 23:02; Kaleb Borg, 23:47.



The girls also had a good day. Heather Pankratz ran their route in 15:26, Jocelyn Kliewer in 16:18 and Kara Kaufman in 16:25.



“This was a good meet for us,” said HHS coach Brian Kennell. “Our runners ran great. It puts us in a good position going into Southeast of Saline on Tuesday.”



Area teams-The Goessel boys, meanwhile, had seven runners competing at Bluestem.



For the varsity, Jeremy Voth finished 60th in 18:56, and Nick Schroeder, 77th in 20:01.



For the junior varsity, Kent Peters, 11th in 19:56; Peter Goerzen, 14th in 20:31.



For the freshmen, Lance Hiebert, was 26th in 20:34; Alexander Goossen, 36th in 21:55; Christopher Voth 44th in 22:56.



The girls had four runners competing. For the varsity, Maritt Osland, 15th in 14:10; Amanda Woelk, 20th in 14:24.



Marion had eight boys and 13 girls competing.



For the varsity boys, Keith Dudley led the way with a fifth-place finish in 16:40, Zac Ewert 46th in 18:40, James Davis 51st in 18:43, Eric Voelker 62nd in 19″12 and Emmanuel Ruefenacht 72nd in 20:16.



For the junior varsity, Jared Hett placed seventh in 19:08, Nickolas Hett 32nd in 21:14 and Josh Yerion 48th in 23:30.



For the girls varsity, Krista Zogelman placed 16th in 14:11, Meredith Moore 30th in 14:43, Amy Goentzel 44th in 15:42, Shawna Hett 48th in 16:00, Ashley DeForest 49th in 16:00, Becky Taylor 51st in 16:12 and Ive Eddy 56th in 16:31.



For the junior varsity, Jessica DeForest placed fifth in 15:17, Sarah Davidson sixth in 15:18, Emily Davis 26th in 17:01, Kristy Hess 27th in 17:02, Skylar Bauman 42nd in 19:19 and Amanda Ewert 43rd in 20:44.



For Peabody, Daniel Unger finished the varsity race in 18:32 and Ryan Windsor in 20:22.



Casey Berger ran the girls’ junior varsity race in 17:55.
