The Hillsboro Middle School A-team lost their season opener to Lyons, 30-0, Thursday.

The visitors jumped to a 24-0 halftime with the help of a couple of Trojan mistakes, including a 62-yard interception return for a touchdown in the first quarter.

Despite the margin, coach Darrel Knoll was pleased with the way his team battled in the second half.

“I preached to them about competing and playing hard, and I was really happy with the way they responded in the second half,” he said. “We got a lot more effort, especially out of our key guys.”

The Trojans managed just 60 yards total offense. Tyler Goldsby had 28 yards rushing on two carries and Daniel Deckert had 26 yards on seven carries to lead HMS.

Deckert had seven unassisted tackles and Derek Hamm had six unassisted tackles and two assists to lead the defense.

“I’d never thought I’d say we could lose 30-0 and that I’d still be happy with the effort,” he said. “But they came out hard and I think they had more fun, too.”

Lyons won the seventh-grade game, 20-6. Chad Hughbanks scored the Trojan’s lone touchdown with a 61-yard run in the first quarter. He finished with 108 rushing yards.

On Thursday, the Trojans will host Sterling. The B-team game is schedule to begin at 5 p.m. with the A-team game to follow at 6:30.
