HMS eighth-graders open season with volleyball sweep over Lyons

The Hillsboro Middle School eighth-grade volleyball team opened their season with a two-game sweep of Lyons, Thursday, in Hillsboro.



The Trojans won the first game, 15-7, and the second game, 15-12.



Charity Davis scored 10 points and Emily Ratzlaff scored 8 to lead HMS, while Marissa Diener served a team-leading 9-for-9 and scored six points.



Also scoring for Hillsboro were Sara Hamm with 3, Whitney Washmon 2, and Niki Streeter 1.



Davis, Ratzlaff and Amy Duerksen combined for 97 percent accuracy with their sets.



“Our entire team did well with passing,” said head coach Stephanie Sinclair. “The accurate passing allowed many sets and spikes.”



Hillsboro lost the seventh-grade match, 5-15, 6-15. Courtney Foth, Katelin Unruh and Emily Bebermeyer each scored two points, while Jenny Terrell, Laura Lindsay, Audrey Ediger, Diana Wright and Kelsi Sladen each scored 1.



Lyons also won the mixed-team match, 14-16, 15-6, 15-10. Jessica Vannocker scored 12 points and was 13-for-14 in serves to lead HMS.



Also scoring for Hillsboro were Heather Stepanek 4, Kirsten Cederberg 4, Kari Roble 3, Kim Givens, Jacque Fisher and Stephanie Loewen 2 each, and Megan Pauls, Marci Wodke and Gina Andrews 1 each.



HMS will host Sterling on Thursday. The seventh-grade will begin at 4:30, with the eighth-grade and mixed team to follow.
