VFW is sponsoring scholarship contest

The Ladies Auxiliary for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6958 in Marion is sponsoring the 54th annual scholarship contest for all high school students in our local area.

The contest is called “The Voice of Democracy” and is available to students enrolled in grades 9 through 12 in a public, private, parochial high school or home study program.

This year, one winner will be selected out of every 25 entrants rather than past year’s practice of picking one winner per school. The winners of the local contest will receive $100 from the local VFW Auxiliary.

According to Donna Kreutziger, the auxiliary’s chair of Voice of Democracy, they are pleased to have the contest open to all local students instead of only one school per VFW Post.

“We have seen a decline in participants in the last several years,” Kreutziger said, “We hope to see these changes involve more students.”

Kreutziger added, “The purpose of the contest is to foster patriotism and give high school students an opportunity to voice their opinions and to address their responsibilities to our country.”

Interested students are asked to write and then record a three- to five-minute audio essay that addresses the theme: “What Price Freedom?” The entry deadline is Nov. 1.

Local winners have the opportunity to move on to the district, state and possibly national levels with financial scholarships increasing at each level. The national first-place winner will receive a $25,000 scholarship.

For more information and entry forms, contact Kreutziger at 316-382-2931 or email: canada@southwind.net.
