EDITORIAL: The price of citizenship

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN DON RATZLAFF
Some nations require their youth to serve a tour of duty in the military, regardless of their career aspirations. By doing so, they intend to instill a sense of service in these folks while spreading the obligations of citizenship among the entire populace.

It can’t be done-and probably shouldn’t be even if it could-but perhaps all citizens of Hillsboro should be required by law to serve at least one term on a city board or committee. These committees contribute a lot to the fabric of a community that would otherwise be ignored or be farmed out to professionals at high cost to the taxpayer.

We’d all do well to reconsider the obligations of citizenship. Please volunteer for duty.
