Kuhn finds Hillsboro church a good fit

The Hillsboro United Methodist Church welcomed R. Laney Kuhn as their new pastor July 1.

Kuhn and his wife, Emogene, who is a retired schoolteacher and administrator, come to Hillsboro from Great Bend, where he was pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church.

He also has served in churches in Oklahoma, Louisiana and Kansas.

Kuhn graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University in 1973 with a degree in social work and a double minor in speech broadcasting and child psychology.

From there, he entered the family food brokerage business, where he worked until he entered seminary in 1983.

“I received a call to ministry at a very young age and did not respond to that as promptly and quickly as I probably should have, but I was very active in the United Methodist Church,” Kuhn said.

He had served as a layperson in the church before entering seminary during a major change in his life.

“It was a good transitional time for us in the business and a good time for me spiritually,” Kuhn said.

Kuhn serves on the Kansas West Conference Board of Trustees, the Board of Ordained Ministry and is vice chair of the Kansas Foundation.

He feels his ministry strengths in pastoral care, church administration and church programs will benefit the Hillsboro church.

“The first couple of months I’m getting to know people,” he said. “That’s my plan-get out into the community and get to know the people of Hillsboro.”

Kuhn previously had been to Hillsboro on a couple of occasions and has talked with former pastors of the local church, so he was familiar with the community.

“We found the town extremely clean and the persons we were involved with were extremely helpful, especially during our move time,” he said.

They have had a good experience in Hillsboro so far.

“I have appreciated some of the persons involved in the medical staff,” Kuhn said. “I think they are doing a great job in the nursing home.

“The different types of ministries that are provided in the community are doing a great job and we support them.”

His plan for the future of the church is that it would represent the body of Christ.

“We’re excited about being here and we are going to have a good time,” Kuhn said.

He encouraged people with cable television to stay tuned to Channel 45 at 6 p.m. on Sundays to see the services.
