EDITORIAL: Reduce the speed limit

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN DON RATZLAFF
We join those who would call upon the Kansas Department of Transportation to reduce the speed limit along U.S. 56 north of Hillsboro from 65 mph to 55 mph.

True, the fatal accident that occurred at the intersection of U.S. 56 and North Ash Street was unrelated to that location. That is, it could have happened anywhere along the highway. But enough intersection-related accidents and near-misses have occurred along the stretch of road the spans from Hillsboro Heights to the west to Industrial Park to the east to make a strong and urgent case for lowering the speed limit.

A year or so ago, KDOT turned down our mayor’s request for a speed limit reduction. In so many words, they said not enough people had been killed yet to warrant such a change.

We must ask, how many more do we need?
