Newton team wins scramble tournament

A team from Newton won the Four-Person Scramble Golf Tournament held July 15 at the Hillsboro Municipal Golf Course.



In a scorecard playoff, Brad Sherard, Trent Ash and Arnold Cavazos from Newton won the championship with a score of 55.



Doug Dick, Harold Schultz, Dan Harrison and Jim Buckla, from Hillsboro and Marion placed second with a score off 55.



Craig Wyatt, Allan Stuart, Bill Broce, and Justin Redeker, all from Herington, placed third with a score of 57.



In the first flight, Larry Penner, Gary Vogt, Jim Bestgen and John Sabastian, from Newton and Hesston, won with a score of 62 in a scorecard playoff.



Mike Moore, John Arharbisk, Bobby Shinkle and Troy Moore from Peabody, placed second with a score of 62.



David Mason, Marlow Penner, Greg Rhea, and J. Laraz, all from Newton, placed third with a score of 63.



A team from Cottonwood Falls won the second flight in a scorecard playoff with a score of 65. Team members included Craig Cooper, Don Engalls, J. Engalls and Shawn Potts.



Second place went to Jim Vanek, Stan Utting, Mike Fisher and Randy Weigel in a score card playoff with a score of 65.



Don Wipf, Scott Deutschendorf, Brad Cool and Damian Hugaboon, all from Wichita, placed third with a score of 65.



Winner of the “closest to the pin” competition was Mike Moore of Peabody, who was 140 inches from the pin. “Straightest drive” went to Troy Kemling of Hillsboro. The winning “Longest putt” was 39-41/2 by Bruce Bartel of Hillsboro.
