Tabor welcomes new faculty, staff

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN STAFF
Howard Keim, a former Tabor College faculty member, has been named the

new vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty at

Tabor.

His appointment highlights several staff additions the college has

made in recent weeks.

Keim replaces Lon Fendall, who served in this position since 1995.

?God has answered our prayers in providing leadership for this

important position,? said Larry Nikkel, Tabor president. ?Howard?s

respect for the college, experience in the broader

Mennonite/Anabaptist world, commitment to academic excellence and

interest in organizational life make him a great fit for this

position. I look forward to working with him in planning for next year

and beyond.?

Keim completed both his bachelor of science and master of arts

degrees at Central Michigan University, Mount Pleasant. In 1996, he

received a doctorate in communication studies from the University of

Kansas, Lawrence.

From 1979 to 1987, Keim served as pastor of Kalona (Iowa) Mennonite

Church. He then directed the pastoral ministries program and the

introduction to communication course at Hesston College from 1987 to

1996.

From 1996 to 1999, he was assistant professor of communication at

Tabor. Currently, Keim is a field services director with Communities

in Schools of Kansas, Wichita.

Keim is a published author whose works include The Handbook for

Speaker-Audience Communication (McGraw-Hill).

He will assume his new role at Tabor College, beginning July 1.

In addition to Keim, Tabor has hired several other faculty and staff

members in recent weeks.

Teaching faculty

The latest addition to the college?s teaching faculty, is Sheila

Schmitt, who has accepted a position on the music faculty. Her

specialty will be piano and music theory.

?Sheila is a great fit for Tabor,? said Fendall, who is completing his

work as vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty.

?She knows Kansas, she has completed course work for her doctorate,

she is a committed Christian and she will relate well to the other

faculty in our music department.?

Schmitt attended the Guildhall Conservatory of Music and Drama,

London, England, prior to her undergraduate studies in piano

performance at Houghton College, Houghton, N.Y.

In 1992, she was awarded a master?s degree in piano performance and

pedagogy from the University of Colorado, Boulder. She is currently

completing dissertation work toward a doctorate in piano performance

at the University of Kansas.

Schmitt has performed recitals throughout Kansas, Colorado and New

York. She has studied under Jack Winerock, Robert Spillman, C. Nolan

Huizenga, Doloras Gadevsky, and Nina Serada.

Previously, she served as an adjunct professor of piano at Ottawa

University and as a teaching assistant at Lawrence Piano School,

Lawrence.

Student development

Lisa Friesen has been recently appointed to the position of women?s

resident director.

Friesen attended Tabor from 1993 to 1995 and graduated from Kansas

State University in 1998. Most recently, she worked as a clinical

dietician with The Hunter Health Clinic, Wichita.

?As a committed alumna of Tabor College, Lisa will be a significant

asset to the student development programs,? says Judy Hiebert, vice

president for student development. ?I look forward to working with her

and seeing her serve as a mentor on our campus.?

Admissions

Lucas King has been hired as an admissions counselor at Tabor.

In May 2000, King graduated from Tabor with a degree in business

administration and management. He previously worked as a telephone

service representative for APAC customer services and served as a

project management intern with Sprint Communications.

?We are pleased to have Lucas as a member of the enrollment management

team,? said Glenn Lygrisse, vice president for enrollment management.

?Though Lucas comes to us as a recent graduate, he already has

extensive experience in sales and marketing. At Tabor he will be able

to visit with people interested in a quality education and share with

them his positive college experiences.?

Support staff

Rick Donley, Dodge City, has been appointed director of maintenance.

Donley replaces Marvin Funk, who took over the position when

maintenance director Gary Massey died.

Donley is currently employed as the maintenance supervisor of USD 443

in Dodge City. He has also worked as a ServiceMaster contract manager

and owned an appliance service center for 15 years in Liberal.

?We?re excited to find someone with the personal caliber Rick has

demonstrated for this key position,? said Kirby Fadenrecht, vice

president for business and finance. ?His experience in directing

maintenance operations will be extremely valuable in contributing to a

smooth transition in the management of Tabor?s maintenance

department.?

Geneva Just, Hillsboro, has been appointed assistant to the vice

president for advancement. Just has worked in various capacities at

Tabor College since 1991, including humanities division secretary and
