Goessel?s Chad Unrau woke up Saturday morning meet with a vision that
he and teammate Lyndl Duerksen would bring home a state trophy for
the
Goessel Bluebirds.
It wasn?t to be, but Unrau still had a historic day, becoming the
first Goessel boy to win four state medals in individual events.
The day began with Unrau competing in the 110-meter high hurdles.
He
blasted out to a lead the first half of the race, but was
gradually
passed and edged at the finish by Curt Sudbeck of Bern, a rival
from
the KU Relays.
Unrau?s automatic time of 14.92 converts to a hand-held time of
14.68?.08 of a second off Goessel?s school record.
His next event was the 100 meters. Unrau was beaten out of the
blocks,
finishing fifth in 11.62, well off his usual time of 11.2 or 11.3.
Then, Duerksen placed ninth in a tough 1,600-meter race in a time
of
4:52.2.
Unrau returned with a vengeance in the 300-meter intermediate
hurdles,
blowing away the field by six to eight yards in a school record
time
of 39.88.
In Goessel?s final event of the day, the 200-meter dash, Unrau
placed
fifth in 23.26.
Goessel boys finished sixth, thanks to Unrau?s 22 points. They
were
mathematically in the hunt for a trophy until the 200 meters.
Two Goessel girls? relay teams made surprise appearances at the
state
track meet. Amanda Woelk, Carmelita Goossen, Rendi Cress and
Lindsey
Unruh finished 13th in the 4×800. This was the first year that
event
was held in Class 1A and 2A.
Cress, Woelk, Ashley Soyez and Unruh ran 4:19.2 for sixth place
in
the preliminaries and fell four seconds short of qualifying for
finals.
?We had so much fun with these kids at state,? said coach Brian
Stucky. ?We never really expected to qualify girls? relays to
state,
so they were just happy to be there
