Goessel woman named Bethel award winner

Clara Regier Schmidt, Goessel, is the recipient of this year?s

?Outstanding Nursing Alumnus Award? at Bethel College.



Schmidt graduated from Bethel in 1941 with a bachelor?s degree in home

economics and science. In 1943, she graduated from Bethel Deaconess

School of Nursing.



Schmidt spent much of her career in Paraguay. She married physician

John R. Schmidt and served as his assistant in the Mennonite colony in

Fernhein, Paraguay, during the 1940s.



From 1951-72, Schmidt and her husband founded Km. 81, a Mennonite

leprosy mission in east Paraguay. They also operated a mission clinic

and hospital which served a population of 36,000. In 1983, the couple

returned to the United States, where Schmidt worked at the satellite

clinic at Bethesda Home in Goessel.



Currently, she volunteers at Bethesda Home and Harvey County Health

Ministries.



Schmidt and her husband have eight children. They are members of the

Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church at Goessel.



She is one of three alumni Bethel has honored this spring. The other

two are Franzie L. Loepp, Normal, Ill., who will receive Bethel?s

?Distinguished Achievement Award? for 2000? and Donald Klassen, Sioux

Falls, S.D., who will receive the ?Outstanding A
