Michael Hagen, Hillsboro High?s team leader all season, qualified for
state with his performance Monday at the regional meet in Hesston.
Hillsboro will host the Class 3A state tournament Friday and Saturday
at the Sports Complex.
As a team, the Trojans finished in a tie with Maranatha Academy for
second place with 7 points. Hesston won the title with 10.
Hagen began his march to state with a 6-0, 6-0 whitewash of Hanna of
Belleville. He then beat Claassen of Hesston, 6-4, 6-3, before losing
in the finals to Ehrlich of Marantha, 1-6, 4-6.
Teammate Jared Hefley won his opening round against Shear of Hesston,
6-0, 6-4, then lost to Hovorka of Belleville, 1-6, 3-6.
In doubles, Brandon Ratzlaff and Zach Unruh defeated Walker and Moore
of Belleville, then lost to Eaker and Medford of Maranatha, 1-6, 5-7.
Hillsboro?s Adam Driggers and Caleb Dirks were eliminated in their
opening round by Alfaro and Jantz of Hesston, 2-6, 2-6.
?While Michael was the only one to qualify, I felt good about the way
the rest of the players competed,? said coach Lonnie Isaac. ?In a
couple of matches we had chances to get the second set and move to a
third, but just could not win the critical points.

he plays like he?s capable of,?
