As part of National Safe Boating Week, May 20-26, the Kansas
Department of Wildlife & Parks, Marion County Sheriff?s Department and
the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be offering courtesy boat
inspections from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., May 20, at Marion Reservoir.
The inspections will be done at boat ramps at Marion Cove, Hillsboro
Cove and Cottonwood Point.
Also during the week, the National Safe Boating Council, in
partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard and the National Association of
State Boating Law Administrators, will launch the 2000 ?Boat Smart
From the Start? campaign.
The campaign is intended to reach more than 80 million boaters in the
United States and communicate this year?s message, ?Boat smart from
the start. Wear your life jacket.?
?It is extremely important that each boater renew his or her awareness
of boating safety, boating laws and the need for the consistent use of
life jackets,? said Marvin Peterson, conservation officer for the
