The Hillsboro High School golf team suffered something of a split

personality Thursday, playing in two tournaments on the same day in

two different cities.

The team?s top six golfers finished third at the Cheney Invitational

held at Cherry Oaks Golf Course. A second ?varsity? team of the next

four golfers on the roster finished ninth at the Halstead Invitational

played on the Wedge Wood Golf Course.

At Cheney, Grant Wiens finished second in the medalist competition and

Chuck Bina placed fifth with scores of 75 and 76, respectively.

Rounding out the team scores were Phillip Thiessen with an 82, Adam

Woods with 84, Jordan Plett with 92 and Eric Railsback with 100.

The top four performances resulted in a team score of 317, which put

the Trojans just three points behind the winner, Andover, and one

stroke out of second place.

Eighteen teams participated. Centre was the only other area team to

enter. They finished with a four-man score of 361.

Jon Herbel led the Cougars with a 76. He was followed by Justin

Makovec with an 88, Dusty Caldwell 97, Ryan Makovec 100, Jason Backhus

105 and Chris Peterson 108.

At Halstead, Jason Rooker registered a 93, Chip Reece a 98, Michael

Roble a 102 and Jesse Janzen a 106.

Their team score of 399 placed them ninth in a field of 11 teams.

David Ward represented Peabody-Burns and carded a 91.

Last Tuesday, May 2, the Trojan varsity team finished seventh among

seven teams at the Hesston Invitational. The junior varsity team

placed fifth among five teams.

Each school that participated could bring up to eight golfers. After

playing 18 holes, the best four scores became the varsity and the

bottom scores became the junior varsity.

Bina carded Hillsboro?s top score of 80. He was followed by Thiessen

and Woods, both with 85, Wiens with 86, Plett with 92, Railsback with

99, Reece with 109 and Erik Roble with 120.

That gave the Trojan varsity a score of 316 and the junior varsity a
