On the job

Amy Helmer (right) stands with her mother and co-partner, Luci, at the Big Scoop across from Central Park in Marion. The Helmers took over ownership of the Big Scoop April 6. Amy, who had been the manager of the Big Scoop for almost a year under the previous owners, said they asked her if she was interested in the business. Amy and her mother decided to give it a try. The Helmers have made a few changes since the change in ownership. The menu now offers deli sandwiches, ice cream cakes and salads. Amy said they were trying to offer more non-greasy foods. They also have taken a few of the less popular items off of the menu, but for the most part it remains the same. The new hours are from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. In early May, the hours will be extended until 9 p.m. and after Memorial Weekend they will be open until 10 p.m. through the summer.
