The Hillsboro High School four-man golf team finished ninth among 21 teams at the Nickerson High School Invitational golf tournament played at the Highlands Country Club in Hutchinson April 10.
The Trojans? foursome was led by Adam Woods with an 89, followed by Grant Wiens and Chuck Bina with a 93 and Phillip Thiessen with a 94.
Jordan Plett and Eric Railsback comprise Hillsboro?s two-man team in the junior varsity tournament there. They shot a 104 and 114, respectively.
The Trojans? combined score for the six-man division was 587, which placed them sixth among the 13 teams competing in it.
The Trojans failed to place a player among the top 10 varsity players or the top five junior varsity players.
?The guys struggled at the Highlands,? coach Scott O?Hare said. ?Most felt like they played much better than their scores indicated. A few bad shots here and there on that course can really blow up in your face.
?A top 10 finish isn?t bad out of 21 teams,? he added. ?But I think the guys would agree that we are capable of much better. It just wasn?t their day.?
The full Trojan junior varsity team participated in a tournament in Hesston April 11. The Trojans finished fifth out of five teams.
The tournament used a ?modified Stableford? scoring system rather than stroke play. Golfers received a +5 for an eagle, +3 for birdies, +1 for par, 0 for bogey, -1 for a double bogey, and -2 for triple bogey.
The Trojans? scores were: Eric Railsback -12, Eric Roble -11, Jason Rooker -13, Casey Reese -8. Jesse Janzen -12 and Billy Winegarner -15 for a team score of -70.
Hesston won with a score of -18, followed by Sedgwick -60, Lyons -62, Marion -63, and Hillsboro.
?Most of these guys have only been playing golf for a year or two,? O?Hare said. ?They struggled a little at Hesston simply because the course is much more demanding than Hillsboro?s.?
On Friday, the Trojans will play in Derby at the Wichita Collegiate Invitational. Eleven teams are expected to participate.
