County schools battle stiff wind, competition at Council Grove

Marion, Goessel and Centre golfers battled blustery conditions at the nine-team Council Grove Invitational Friday. The Warriors finished fifth, the Bluebirds eighth and the Cougars ninth.

The host team demonstrated their consistency by placing four players in the top 10 to claim team honors with a score of 334. Marion finished at 369 and Goessel at 380, one stroke ahead of Centre.

Marion and Goessel did not place anyone in the top 10 medalist competition, but Jon Herbel of Centre placed fourth with an 82, seven strokes behind the leader, Cory Horton of Council Grove.

Blake Conyers paced Marion with an 88, one stroke out of medal contention. He was followed by Travis Moore 90, Oliver Good 95, Jack Branson 96, Joey Buchholz 97 and Keith Dudley 106.

Jon Lawrence of Goessel finished with an 89. Teammate Luke Herman was next with a 93, Jeremy Miller and Ben Schmidt each shot 99, Kenton Nickel 103 and J.J. Voth 106.

Following Herbel for Centre were Justin Makovec with a 94, Christ Peterson 102, Dusty Caldwell 103, Ryan Makovec 106 and Todd Beneke 114.
