Tabor breaks ground for strength-training facility

As the student body and guests looked on, Tabor College held a groundbreaking ceremony for its long-awaited strength-training facility addition to the Campus Recreation Center (CRC) Monday, March 27.

President Larry Nikkel addressed the student body, saying, ?A good education includes exercising the mind, soul and body. With the addition of this facility, Tabor College will be better able to serve our students?encouraging a more wholistic development.?

During their February 2000 meeting, the Tabor College Board of Directors gave the go-ahead for construction of the facility.

In 1999, Student Senate voted to raise student fees $10 per semester with hopes of gaining the board?s support. Funds contributed by the student body totaled $40,000, and as of March 20, pledges and donations came to $167,000?just $8,000 short of the $175,000 goal.

This figure will cover the actual cost of the building, new equipment, and a maintenance endowment. The new addition will contain a weight room and two offices.

?We appreciate the support and confidence the board has shown toward this student-led effort,? said Luke Haidle, Student Senate president. ?Student Senate voted to raise student fees because we believe this will enhance our student life and provide the college with a resource that is long overdue.?
