?Dudley Do-Right.? Rated: PG. I give it a 2 on a scale of 5.

As a kid, I was a fan of the ?Dudley Do-Right? cartoons on ?The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show.? Heck, I even owned a rare ?Dudley Do-Right: A Great American? sweatshirt. I have no idea where I got it or where it ended up.

That same sort of blind confusion returned to me when I watched Brendan Fraser bring the character of my childhood to life in video form.

It?s not that I expected much. I knew the film would be childish and filled with the kind of slapstick kindergartners love the most. But, I didn?t expect it to be so boring. How many times can a person stand to see the main character hit in the head with a loose floorboard? I set my limit at 87.

Fraser plays Do-Right, a Canadian Mountie on a mission. He lives in Semi-Happy Valley, where he combats the evil shenanigans of his arch enemy, Snidley Whiplash (Alfred Molina). Snidley has seeded the local rivers and mountainsides with gold dust and nuggets in an attempt to inspire a gold rush he can cash in on. But, Dudley is onto him.

Meanwhile, Dudley?s sweetheart Nell Fenwick (Sarah Jessica Parker) returns from an ambassadorship to Guam. Besides Nell, Dudley?s only true allies are The Prospector (former ?Monty Python? great Eric Idle) and The Chief (Alex Rocco). Both bring a bit of intelligent humor to this otherwise braindead tale.

While the constant narration of the plot by an unnamed voice may work for cartoons, it is nothing short of annoying when carried out from start to finish in a movie format.

My recommendation is to keep this movie title filed away for that night when your elementary school-aged son or daughter has a sleepover.

You will be looking for a harmless, short (75 minutes), innocent, childishly amusing film. ?Dudley Do-Right? is the perfect rent for just such an occasion.
