Local dignitaries and guests participated in the formal ground breaking for Marion?s light commercial and retail industrial park Monday morning. Pictured above are (left to right) Max Hayen, Marion mayor; Dean Batt (shoveling); Betty Batt; Jim Crofoot, Marion city commissioner; and Bill Thompson, business recruitment manager for the Kansas Department of Commerce and Housing, who also made remarks at the ceremony. The land, located just north of U.S. 56 Highway, was formerly owned by Dean Batt?s grandfather. The Batt family eventually came to an agreement with city after the city had made several previous attempts to acquire the property.
