The Hillsboro High School boys’ basketball team is on its way to the sub-state finals after defeating Herington, 64-46, Thursday night in Hillsboro.

The Trojans won with solid defense and tremendous free-throw shooting in the fourth quarter via the Brubacher brothers.

Grant was 10-of-10 from the foul line in the fourth quarter and younger brother Andy hit four-of-six to help lead the Trojans to victory.

The Trojans led by 16 at halftime, but allowed Herington to slip back into the game with a barrage of three-pointers early in the fourth quarter to cut the Hillsboro lead to eight, 43-35.

But Trojan floor leader Tyson Ratzlaff responded with consecutive steals leading to back-to-back buckets for Hillsboro.

Grant Brubacher led Hillsboro with 18 points, while Ratzlaff added nine. The Trojans also got a lift from Scott Winter, who scored nine points and sparked a first-half rally.

The win places Hillsboro in the sub-state final Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. against Osage City, who defeated Southeast of Saline 56-42 in the other sub-state semifinal.
