Trojans girls win in sub-state opener

It was mostly a matter of going through the motions in the second half for the Hillsboro High School girls’ basketball team in their sub-state opener against Ellsworth Tuesday night.

Hillsboro led 26-1 at halftime, and did not allow an Ellsworth rally in the second half on the way to an easy 54-22 victory.

Hillsboro featured a balanced offensive attack, led by 16 points from Angela Kroeker and 10 points from her sophomore sister, Shannon Kroeker.

Heather Matz played a solid inside game, scoring only four points but pulling in eight rebounds and providing solid post play.

With the win, Hillsboro advances to the semifinals to take on the winner of the Osage City-Marion game. The game will be played Friday, either at 6 p.m. or 7:30 p.m., depending on distances between the surviving teams.
