The Hillsboro High School boys’ and girls’ basketball teams came away with wins Friday night at Nickerson in a non-division MCAA double-header.

The girls used a 17-2 second-quarter run to open up a seven-point halftime advantage, then pulled away from the Panthers late for a 67-44 win.

After shooting just one free throw in the entire first half, the Trojans made 12-of-20 second-half free throws to help throttle the Panthers, who came into the game as co-champions of the Central Division at 7-1 and 12-7 overall.

Angela Kroeker was once again the leading scorer for the Trojans with 19 points, while sophomore Jill Hein added 17.

The boys, meanwhile, built a solid halftime advantage and then extended it late in the game en route to a 77-55 victory.

Grant Brubacher led the Trojans with 20 points while Jeremy Loewen chipped in a 16-point performance. The Trojans also got a lift inside from Jesse Hamm with 10 points.

The Hillsboro boys will host Marion at 7 p.m. Monday night in the opening round of sub-state, while the girls will host Ellsworth at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Both teams are seeded No. 2 in their respective tournaments.
