Goessel H.S. forensics team places first in tournament

The Goessel High School forensics team took first place Feb. 19 at a 27-team tournament held in Nickerson.

All of the schools competed in the preliminary rounds and finals were divided into Class 1A and Class 2A schools.

Tara Goerzen and Katherine Krehbiel qualified for state competition in serious solo act and poetry, respectively.

Others making the finals were Eunice Voth, who placed third, and Ben Schmidt, who placed fourth, in informative speaking.

Katie Schroeder placed third in oration and Jeff Franzen placed fourth in humorous solo act.

Bethany Amstutz placed second in prose and fourth in serious solo act. Nick Schroeder placed third in prose.

Becca Hill placed fourth and Jill Schmidt placed seventh in poetry.

Peter Goerzen, Sara Ratzlaff, Shawn Rath, Sara Hill and Marla Bedlington also earned points for the sweepstakes trophy.

?I am elated with the way the team has done this season,? Leann Toews, coach, said. ?We went to Marion last Thursday and took third with only nine entries out of a possible 18. We have no seniors on our team so these kids have worked up to their potential.?

Placing at the Marion meet were Katherine Krehbiel and Sara Ratzlaff, who placed first in duet acting.

Eunice Voth placed third in informative speaking.

Jill Schmidt placed fourth in poetry and sixth in serious solo act and Jeff Franzen placed sixth in humorous solo act.

Sara Hill and Shawn Rath also contributed points for the third place trophy.
