Trojans split games with Collegiate

It was a dramatic doubleheader Tuesday night as the Hillsboro Trojan boys’ and girls’ basketball teams hosted Wichita Collegiate in an MCAA match-up.

The girls started the evening by pulling away late in a contest that proved to be tougher than expected. The Trojans won, 62-46.

Angela Kroeker scored a game-high 21 points and carried the Trojans down the stretch, scoring six fourth-quarter points.

Sara Janzen added nine for the Trojans (15-2, 6-0), while Shannon Kroeker and Angela Herzet scored eight points each.

The Trojan boys had a much more difficult task, taking on the No. 1 team in Class 3A. Hillsboro lost a well-fought battle to the run-and-gun Spartans, 53-48.

Collegiate used its substitution strategy of five players at a time to wear down the Trojans, pulling away late after Hillsboro made the game close at 47-45 following two Ross Duerksen free throws with just 1:02 remaining in the game.

Grant Brubacher led the Trojans (11-6, 3-3) with 16 points, followed by Duerksen with eight and Andy Brubacher with seven.
