Trojan boys fall short in OT, girls win

It was too large a task to ask the HILLSBORO HIGH SCHOOL BOYS’ basketball team to shut down Halstead junior forward Dennis Latimore Friday night.

The 6-9 Latimore poured in 42 points, including two free throws with eight seconds remaining in overtime to help give the Dragons a 60-59 win.

Grant Brubacher, who finished the contest with 22 points, scored five points in the final nine seconds of the game, including a 3-pointer with two seconds left on the clock. But it wasn’t enough for the Trojans, who fell to 11-5 overall and 3-2 in the MCAA Mid Division.

Junior Nathan Fish had a career high 22 points, while sophomore Ross Duerksen added eight.

The HHS GIRLS pulled out a big win behind clutch free-throw shooting from guard Jill Hein, winning 60-57.

The sophomore hit four-of-four from the charity stripe in the final 23 seconds to ensure a Hillsboro win.

The Trojans had trouble all night containing Halstead senior Stacy Keller, who scored 29 points and hit 11 consecutive free throws in the game.

Angela Kroeker led Hillsboro (14-2, 5-0) with 22 points and Hein added 16.
