Son Dan just e-mailed some photos of his January ice-climbing trip to Ouray, Colo. They show him climbing straight up a frozen waterfall.

His mother thought it didn?t look safe, so, to make her feel better, I took the picture and turned it sideways so he was laying down on the ice.

We also learned that he is involved in what is called first ascents and new routes. That means, ice that has never been climbed before. He plans to be immortalized in the 2000 American Alpine Journal. I say go for it.

It?s a state of mind, you know.

A while back I was asking in this column where the phrase, ?Is it further to Lehigh or by bus,? came from. I learned from Jim Peters last week that it was coined by Bill Juhnke who grew up in Lehigh. And the saying was actually ?Is it further from Lehigh to Newton or by bus??
