Jobs available for census workers

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN
This spring, Census 2000 and the Topeka local census office will hire enumerators for its April-June nonresponse follow-up of Census 2000.

The primary mission of Census 2000 is to count every person in the country, including the Marion County area. A complete count is important to communities in terms of congressional seats and the allocation of federal money.

The Census Bureau is looking for people to canvass their own neighborhoods and communities. They prefer local people because they are trusted.

Although the hourly wage may vary according to the position, the Topeka local census office will start enumerators at $9 an hour. Workers will also be reimbursed for mileage in field positions.

To qualify for a job, applicants must be at least 18 years old and pass a short skills test on basic math, English and map reading. For more information, call 785-235-8291 or 1-888-325-7733.
