HMS boys sweep Lyons

The Hillsboro Middle School boys basketball team swept Lyons in three consecutive games Monday night.

The eighth-grade team won with a great team effort, topping Lyons 58-38. Aaron Yoder led the way with 17 points while Kyle Jilka had 10, Michael Bookless nine, Tyler Peachey seven and Toby Berg six.

In the seventh-grade game, Hillsboro used a fourth-quarter run to defeat Lyons, 41-38.

Derek Hamm led Hillsboro with 14 points, followed by Dan Deckert with 13, Sammy Espada scored 10 and Tyler Goldsby and Eric Weinbrenner scored two each.

The mixed team used a balanced attack to win 25-19.

Michael Roble and Drew Waldbauer led the Trojans with six points each. Wade Kimbrel scored five, Lee Sorensen four, and Michael Fisher and Randy Klassen two each.

Thursday, Hillsboro took on Lindsborg, winning the eighth-grade but losing the seventh-grade game.

Yoder scored 12 points to lead Hillsboro in the eighth-grade game. Peachey added 10, Jilka eight, Dan Yoder six, Brodie Unrau six and Berg and Jared Fish two each.

The seventh-grade team was dismissed by Lindsborg 58-28, being outscored 20-2 in the final period.

Weinbrenner and Hamm led Hillsboro with six points each, while Espada had five, Deckert four, Goldsby three, and Kody Borg and Sorensen two each.

In the seventh-grade tournament last weekend, Hillsboro was 1-1, winning against Lindsborg, but losing to Hesston.

Hamm scored 15 points in the two games, Deckert 14 and Espada added nine.
