Commission buys radios for Florence EMT crew

The Marion County Commission approved a request from the Florence Ambulance department for new radios Monday.

The five new radios will cost the county $3,035. The money will come out of the county sales tax budget.

?I think we should pay what they asked us for,? commissioner Jack Bruner said. ?We?ve done it before (for Florence).?

The only opposition to the request came from the other commissioners, who said they wished Florence was part of the county-wide EMS department.

Commissioner Bob Hein also said he was concerned that if the county paid for budget items for Florence EMS, other cities would come with similar requests.

But Bruner said other communities should understand this is a different circumstance because Florence doesn?t receive the funding other departments receive.

?They might just give the best service in the county,? Bruner said. ?I think this would be a good thing for us to do.?

The request, brought up last week by Scott Zogelman, a member of the Florence Ambulance Department, was approved by a 3-0 vote following considerable discussion.

In other action:

— Commissioners signed a Class B liquor license for the Marion Country Club. It allows the club to sell beer and liquor.

— Clerk Carol Maggard reported the county has received more requests for bids on the county long-distance service. Most of the new requests were from local providers.

— Maggard also reported the county now has two forms for keg registration. One form stays in the county clerk?s office, the other is split between dealer and the purchaser.

— Jan Moffitt, county health department administrator, said the county has hired a new nurse, Sherry Moody. Moffitt also said the department has been running smoothly after a nurse had resigned.

— Road and bridge director Gerald Kelsey informed commissioners the project by Pizza Hut on U.S. Highway 56 turnoff to Pizza Hut of Marion will cost more because of commissioners had requested a thicker cement cover. Cost of the project will be $52,000.

The department will also order 10,000 pounds of coach mix for blade patching on county roads, which should cost about $18,000.

The road and bridge department accepted four bids on fuel. Two went to Cardie Oil of Tampa and two to Cooperative Grain & Supply of Hillsboro. The department hired Cooke, Flatt and Stroble for bridge inspection.
