Bethesda Home, Goessel, surpassed its goal for the ?Heritage of Care? campaign by raising $845,926.

?When this community sees a need, they rise to the occasion to meet the need,? said Richard Drake, chair of the community campaign. ?This response truly reflects the continuing support of Bethesda as we begin a second century of service to this community.

?I anticipated that the community would respond and am thrilled to be a part of the success of this campaign,? he added.

The campaign provides funding for the construction of a new special-care unit for residents with Alzheimer?s disease, current bond reduction, endowment foundation, room renovation and physical therapy equipment needs.

?It is nice to know that the cash is in hand to build the special care unit before we turn the first shovel of dirt,? said Pete Flaming, director of marketing/fund development.

Work began on the special care unit Jan. 21.

The momentum for the campaign began when it was announced the Bethesda Family, made up of residents, employees and board members, exceeded their $100,000 goal by nearly 35 percent.

A group of 27 volunteers served as Bethesda ambassadors, sharing information about the campaign.

?It was exciting to see and experience the energy and enthusiasm that this group of volunteers had toward meeting our goal,? Drake said.

With a goal of $600,000 and a challenge goal of $800,000 in pledges, the total amount of contributions exceeded the challenge goal by 6 percent.

A significant amount of contributions came via the Kansas Community Service Tax Credit Program administered by the Kansas Department of Commerce and Housing.

Two successive grant proposals were approved for the special care unit. There was a good response to the tax incentive program, which ended Dec. 31.

In addition, the Mabee Foundation contributed $90,000. Current contributions and pledges total more than $1.07 million.
