HHS boys beat Smoky Valley…again

Grant Brubacher scored 21 points to lead the Hillsboro Trojans past Smoky Valley, 54-50, in Lindsborg Tuesday night.

This game was played only three days after Hillsboro defeated the Vikings 60-45 in the Trojan Classic tournament.

The rematch proved to be a very different game. Last week, the Trojans jumped to an early 11-0 lead and led by 20 to 25 points most of the game.

Tonight, the Vikings took the early advantage, though Hillsboro came back to take an 11-9 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Then, led by the shooting and ball handling of Brubacher, Hillsboro built a 28-18 lead by the half. The Vikings came within two points of Hillsboro in the final quarter, but two crucial free throws (in a one-and-one situation) by Jeremy Loewen iced the game in the final seconds. Loewen finished with 12 points.

As in their first matchup, Hillsboro played without the services of Tyson Ratzlaff, who is nursing an injured foot.

With the win, Hillsboro moved to 8-4 on the season. Their next game will be Tuesday, Feb. 1, against Ellinwood.
