Local schools close for King holiday

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN PRESS RELEASE
USD 410 students recognized Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a day off from school. Students received holiday because the calendar had an extra day toward the end of the year to be taken off in order to make the year start and end on the right days, according to Gordon Mohn, superintendent.

Previously, students had taken off on President?s Day, Feb. 21.

?We wanted to bring recognition to this holiday,? Mohn said of King?s birthday.

Because students are getting this day off, they will not get the day off after Easter. Mohn said they decided to take an earlier holiday because Easter came so late this year.

?We would have gone from the first of January to spring break without a day off,? he said.
