Some of the bigger schools have girls? basketball games second and the boys? games first so the community supports the girls as much as the boys. Why doesn?t Hillsboro do this, or try it at least? As soon as 8 p.m. approaches and it?s time for the boys? game, 50 percent more people show up.
James Thomas, Hillsboro High School athletic director, said scheduling games, including starting times for girls? and boys? games, is not a unilateral decision.
?Basically that would have to be a league decision if we wanted to switch the times around,? Thomas said. ?It was mentioned once, but that?s about as far as it got.?
Thomas said the change is not likely because ?the hard reality? is that boys? basketball simply draws more fans than girls? basketball does. ?Girls have come a long way in their ability to play, but they still haven?t developed quite the following that boys do,? Thomas said.
