New coach to lead MHS golf

The Marion golf team welcomes a new coach to the program in what likely will be a rebuilding year for the Warriors.“We have a young crew, and it’s about them improving and getting better,” said coach Lucas King, who takes over for Lee Leiker.
“We just have a bunch of new golfers who are just getting out and being outdoors and improving their skills,” King said. “So just coming out and working and improving and getting some guys to state is kind of our goal.”

Three return for PBHS golf

The Peabody-Burns golf team has a small squad this season, but hopes to find success as individuals.“I’m excited about my three letter-winners,” coach Jim Pohlman said. “But I only have eight kids going out this year.”
Returning for the Warriors are senior letter-winners Matt Hiebert, McKenzie Ensminger and Tommy Morris.
“Their scholastics and their team leadership encourage the younger ones, so I depend on them,” Pohlman said.
Though they may be small in numbers, Pohlman hopes the Warriors will be mighty on the scoreboard to compensate.
“I have four who are shooting in the low 90s, so when we shoot below 90 we’ll be in competition,” he said.

Numbers up for Peabody-Burns track and field

The Peabody-Burns track team has fast shoes to fill following the graduation of hometown sprinting star Lauren Pickens last spring.But the Warriors have a roster full of juniors and sophomores eager to make their own mark.
“We have more kids participating this year than last, so it will be easier to fill events and compete among ourselves every day,” coach Brian Lightner said.
“We graduated kids who did a lot of scoring for us at the league meet, so skill development of the younger kids and the leadership of the upperclassmen will be the key to our success at the end of the season.”
The boys finished third in the Wheat State League last season. The girls placed eighth in the league and sixth at state.

Dick top golfer for Hillsboro

With one state qualifier and three additional letter-winners returning, Hillsboro golf coach Scott O’Hare is hopeful the Trojans can field a competitive four-man team this spring.For that to happen, though, O’Hare is looking for two things to emerge: the first is more consistent play among his returners, and the second is for one or two of his three freshmen to play well enough to contribute at the varsity level as the season progresses.
Consistency begins at the top with the Trojans’ No. 1 golfer, Devin Dick, who tied for 40th among 101 competitors at the Class 3A state tournament last season.

Shewey to lead Trojan tennis

Led by a returning state qualifier, the Hillsboro boys’ tennis team is upbeat about the upcoming campaign, according to coach Stuart Holmes.“The guys have been playing well in practice and we’re looking forward to another great season,” Holmes said.
Pacing the Trojans will be senior Grant Shewey, who placed sixth in singles at the Class 3A state tennis tournament last year and posted a 22-8 season record.
“Grant continues to work on his game and seems mentally prepared for another season of battles at No. 1 singles,” Holmes said.
