The Centre golf team will build on past successes and returning experience to seek a state title this season.
“We currently have gone to the state tourney the past three seasons and are looking for our fourth trip to state this season at Emporia,” said coach Greg Wyatt, who is returning for his 11th season.
Centre is slated to host the Class 1A state tournament this season at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course.
Last year the Cougars finished ninth in state competition after winning six of 10 meets during the regular season.
“We were not pleased with our finish to last season and hope to improve upon that,” Wyatt said. “We have finished ninth, seventh and fifth at the state meet and hope to be in the top three at least this season.”
Centre has four of its six state golfers returning: Adam Matx, Tyler Klenda, Brian Burhoop and Dylan Svitak. Wyatt said the team will depend heavily on their experience.
The Cougars also will look to Trevor Hageberg, Benjamin Wirtz, James Wyatt and Cody Johnson to make significant contributions to help the Cougars get to state.
“They’ve been out for golf and their game has improved throughout the course of time,” Wyatt said. “Most of the others coming in are freshman and beginners.”
He said the Cougars would be working on their putting and short game, as well as being smart with their shots and not taking risks.
“We’re going to have to shoot some relatively low scores,” Wyatt said. “We’re going to set goals to see where we need to be for our team scores.
“If we can shoot 330 or lower we have a good shot at going to or winning state.”
