The Tabor College baseball team is already riding the momentum from a strong start to the season, bearing out their preseason No. 1 ranking in the KCAC conference.
“It is nice to be respected by the other teams in our conference,” coach Mark Standiford said about the ranking. “I believe the KCAC is stronger this year than any of my previous ones.”
The Bluejays are already well on their way in the hunt for a KCAC title and beyond, putting up an impressive 24-5 record so far this season against a combination of conference and non-conference teams.
“Our goals remain the same every year,” Standiford said. “We want to win the KCAC, advance to a regional and then to the World Series.”
Standiford said defense will be their focus as the Bluejays continue to work to improve this season.
“Pitching and defense is what wins championship and that is what we are consistently trying to improve on,” he said. “Defense is our best strength, followed closely by our offense and pitching.”
The Bluejays are just beginning their conference schedule, having played McPherson and Bethany already this season and preparing to face off with Saint Mary this Friday and Saturday.
“Like always, every conference game will be tough,” Standiford said. “We already have played nationally-ranked William Jewell and York College and we won five out of six of those games.”
If they continue their present course, the Tabor baseball team will be one to watch.
