Six state qualifiers back for Goessel track team

Last year the boys took third in their league and the girls took fourth.

“We are looking forward to a good year again at Goessel High School,” said coach Curtis Guhr, who returns for his fourth year.

The Goessel High School golf team’s seniors and state qualifiers include (from left) Shane Goerzen, sophomore; Neal Brubaker, senior; Kent Duerksen, senior; Corey Buller, senior; Jake Smucker, senior. Justin Coup has 20 boys out for golf this spring in his second year as Goessel High School head coach.

“Three golfers qualified for state, and three seniors and one sophomore were last year’s Heart of America League champions.”

Last year, Goessel was classified as a Class 2A school, but will now compete as a 1A school. “Moving down (in classification) will actually help us,” he said.

Coup said he believes he has a solid team this year.

“We have some people who decided to go out this year who were out for track last year,” he said, adding that this should strengthen the team.

A young Marion baseball team will rely heavily on returning experience. Seniors and letter-winners pictured are, back row (from left), Cole Lewman, Jacob Harper; front row, Vu Hoai Nguyen, Ethan Hett, Blake Crawford, Les Riggs, Corey Seacat, Luis Esteban. The Marion baseball team boasts several new faces this spring, from first-year coach Roger Schroeder to the eight freshmen joining the roster.

“We’ve got a good young group,” Schroeder said. “They’re young—talented, but young. If we can get them all pulling together in the same direction early on, I think we’ll have a chance to be pretty successful.”

The Warriors also have several players returning, including three sophomores (Austin Pedersen, Jacob Harper, and Ethan Hett) and two upperclassmen (junior Cole Lewman and senior Corey Seacat).

“We’re going to rely on them pretty heavily,” Schroeder said. “They all gained valuable experience last year.”

The Marion softball team will try to utilize returning experience and the quickness of newcomers to forge a successful season this spring.

“We have six seniors who are pretty solid and have experience,” said coach Jill Hudson, who returns with assistant coach Chad Atkins. “I expect good things out of them, and a lot of leadership from the seniors.”

Hudson mentioned senior Erin Brown, a transfer this year from Wichita, as a player who will make significant contributions to the team.

“She brings a lot of experience, she brings a lot of positive leadership,” Hudson said. “She really fell into that leadership role well.”

“We’re really looking forward to this year,”coach Grant Thierolf said. “We think we’ve got some young kids who are poised to break out, and have good years.

“We have so many new kids, so many young kids,” he added. “We graduated so much experience last year at the state level.”

Thierolf said he is confident the team will be pretty solid in all the events this year, thanks to good depth in most of them.
