When you have a core of seniors that is large in number and long in varsity experience, expectations for success run high.

No one is expecting more from this year’s...

Hillsboro High School’s only state qualifier from a year ago returns this spring to lead the Trojan tennis team in 2008.

Clay Shewey, who finished eighth in singles at the Class 3-2-1A tournament as a sophomore in 2007, returns taller and more experienced this spring.

He’ll be joined by four other returning letter-winners: Mathew Brown, Ben Heyen, Mark Prieb, all seniors, and sophomore Taylor Hagen.

Having graduated a core of six seniors that accounted for nearly two-thirds of the offense from last season’s 8-9 squad, and with a current roster of 14 players with 12 underclassmen, Hillsboro baseball coach Phil Oelke knows his Trojans are in a rebuilding mode this spring.

“Realistically, it’s going to be a tough season for us, and they know that,” said Oelke, who has compiled a 103-47 record through seven seasons.

“If we can win the games we should win, and...
