Warriors to build on five varsity-tested seniors

Savage, Pickens and Topham were starters last season. The Peabody-Burns boys’ basketball team hopes the depth and experience it brings to the court this season will give them an edge in a competitive Wheat State League.

The Warriors return three starters and have five seniors.

“The seniors will be called on to fill leadership roles as the team finds its identity,” said coach Brian Simmonds, who begins his fifth year at the helm.

PBHSgirlsBBcourtesy Peabody-Burns seniors expected to provide leadership for this year’s squad include (from left) McKenzie Ensminger, Brandee Burnett, Rayna Barnes and Paige Lewis. The Peabody-Burns girls are looking to improve on last season’s 5-16 record with the return of four senior starters.

The Warriors lost in the first round of sub-state last year.

“The core of our team returns this season,” said Darren Schroeder, who returns for his 10th year as head coach. “We should have plenty of experience and understanding of the program returning.”

Senior Rayna Barnes will anchor the Warriors’ inside game, with classmates McKenzie Ensminger, Brandee Burnett and Paige Lewis on the perimeter.

The Centre boys’ basketball squad intends to improve on a 9-12 season last year with the help of plenty of experience returning to the court.

“We are going to be fairly small but experienced this year,” said coach Jim Wyatt, who returns for his fourth year.

“We will have to rely on playing good, solid defense as well as being fundamentally sound on offense.”

The Cougars return eight players, all upperclassmen, from last year’s squad, including starters Justin Deines, James Wyatt and Grant Srajer.

Additional letter-winners who are expected to contribute this year are guards Ty Simons and Kodey Johnson, and forwards Kyle Methvin, Corey Brunzell and Chad Mueller.

CHS girls eye return to state

CentreGirlsBB777 The Cougars return three starters from last year’s state tournament team: (from left) Genesis Rudolph, Beka Basore and Ellie Miller. A Centre girls’ basketball team aiming to repeat last year’s success and punch another ticket to state will look to three returning senior starters to lead the way.

All-league pick Beka Basore is expected to set the pace, backed by classmates Ellie Miller and Genesis Rudolph.

“The way we finished last season, we’re looking to build off the momentum of winning 10 out of our last 12 games and going to state,” said coach Alan Stahlecker. “That was a pretty good experience for them.”

The Cougars also will look to two-time all-league returning starter Cacey Simons and all-league returning starter Shelby Makovec to round out the core group.
